The Belmont High School Ski Team enjoyed its best day ever this week. In a Giant Slalom held at Nashoba Valley in Westford, Massachusetts on Tuesday, January 17th, Junior Captains Julia Martin and Nick Copollo each skied brilliantly to win their respective races. In addition the Belmont boys placed an unprecedented six skiers in the top 25 including Senior Drew Bodmer (8), Freshman Max Vigneras (15), Senior Graham Dennison (18), Senior Captain Tommy Slap (20) and Junior Captain Will Joaquin (22). On the girls course Junior Captain Liza Hote, finished 10th and several additional skiers finished in the top 35. They included Sophomores Yasmine Aoua (25), Evie Martin (26) and Senior Emma Jones (28) and Senior Captain Colleen McVay (33).
Coaches Karen Schwinn-Clanton and Mike Regan are overjoyed with the team. Coach Regan is very proud of all the Belmont skiers. “The majority of the schools we race against are from towns that surround the Nashoba Valley and Wachusett ski areas. As a result many in the field of 96 boys and 96 girls that we face every week have had the opportunity to train and race almost every day of their lives”. Coach Regan believes that skiing so well against such seasoned racers “speaks volumes about the athleticism and drive” of the Belmont athletes. There are four more qualifying races at Nashoba Valley and the season will wrap up at the MIAA State Championships to be held at Wachusett on March 7th.
