Last weekend began on a very cloudy Saturday at Belmont Car Wash (BCW), where shifts of Belmontian Club members dried cars for breast cancer. All of the tips and a donation of $1 per car from BCW will go to the BHS Making Strides Against Breast Cancer team. With many lulls in the course of the day, the students were trying to keep helpful. Miraculously, it appears that with the generosity of many, we will have raised over $1100.
Sunday, October 6 started and ended in a steady drizzle, as 22 students, accompanied by Alice Melnikoff, the Community Service Coordinator, walked in Making Strides. The moisture falling from the sky could not dampen the spirits of determination of the group. We cheered mightily as four students from the Belmontian Club were onstage at the Hatch Shell, in front of thousands of walkers, to represent our second place finish in last year’s Making Strides High School Challenge. With fifty schools participating, BHS rose to the number two spot by raising $13,200 through many activities which brought together many segments of the BHS and Belmont—cheerleaders, the football team, the student body, residents and merchants, came together in support of this important cause.
If you would like to support our team in this year’s Making Strides, team gifts may be made online at our Making Strides website. Go to http:makingstrides.acsevents.org , scroll down to “Find a Team” (under a pink bar), and type in Belmont High School. If you prefer, checks made out to the American Cancer Society may be mailed to Alice Melnikoff, Belmont High School, 221 Concord Ave., Belmont, MA 02478.
The Belmontian Club Making Strides thanks all of its many supporters for its success this year and in the past.
